ariel castro's home ending a decade of torture and abuse for three women in captivity. the cell phone footage was taken by two eyewitnesses right down the street just seconds after amanda berry had escaped. you'll see it start to finish in just a moment. also new this morning, a cnn exclusive. >> do you worry now that people will always suspect that you actually did have a role? >> straight ahead, martin savidge's exclusive interview with onil and pedro castro, the brothers of kidnapping suspect ariel castro. a lot going on this morning. first let's go live to susan candiotti. she's in cleveland. susan, the two young women who shot the video of police rushing into castro's home actually thought that they were in trouble. could you explain that? >> that's right. well, picture this. they happened to be driving down the street when they noticed some police flashing lights behind them. and so they pulled over and

thought uh-oh, what did we do wrong? and then they looked in front of them, and saw everything unfolding. look. and where did you see her, amanda and her little girl? >> coming down the street. >> and then everything unfolded right here? >> yep. >> these two women happened to turn on to ariel astro's street and found themselves smack in the middle of an amazing escape to freedom. >> amanda walking down the street with a cop right when the cap asked her who are you, she passed us and said amanda berry. >> when you heard the name amanda berry and you knew exactly -- >> me and her looked at each other and we had goose bumps and then we pulled up our hoodie and like, you know -- >> goose bumps. >> it hit us quick. >> when she said amanda berry i saw it in her eyes and i knew it was really her. she had tears coming down her face. >> she pulled out her cell phone and rolled video as police ran to ariel castro's house looking for other victims. then her phone ran out of power.

>> shaking real, real, real hard like she was cold. and they took them to the ambulance. >> they watched gina dejesus, michelle knight, amanda berry, and her daughter taken away by ambulance. ♪ on mother's day, special prayers of thanksgiving at holy family catholic church for the women's freedom. >> amanda berry, michelle knight, regina dejesus. >> the crisis management people represented in the women at no charge pleading for privacy and passing along the victims' thanks. from amanda. >> i am so happy to be home with my family. >> from gina. >> i want to thank everyone for all your prayers. >> from michelle. >> i am healthy, happy, and safe. and will reach out to family, friends and supporters in good time. >> castro's home now finally boarded up. sealed as evidence.

a city councilman allowed to stand in the backyard, overcome by what the women endured for a decade. >> you can't help but feel like, you know, the presence of -- of this enormity of -- of the event. i mean, it's unbelievable. >> what did you picture in your mind's eye of what those women went through as you stood back there? >> it's just horrors. absolute horrors. >> and there's that house behind me, just three houses down, with a big high fence in front of it, and steel barricades. and yet people still come from the area to stop and stare and take pictures. they just can't get enough of it. >> they can't believe it, either. right? it's so difficult to believe and comprehend that that was just happening right there in their neighborhood. so what are the next level steps for castro? >> well, he is sitting alone in a jail cell, isolated from other people, remains under suicide prevention. and he is sitting around waiting for what is expected next, and that will be surely a grand jury

indictment any time now. the sheriff tells me that he has had at least two visitors last friday, a couple of lawyers came in to visit him. not known whether he has hired them. >> and susan we were just listening to that crisis intervention team who is providing all of their assistance pro bono. they're saying that they're advising the victims to kind of take their time. are we expecting that we're going to hear from them at all? >> oh, not at all. as you heard them say, they really want their privacy. and besides that, they have to get through possibly a criminal case here. possibly even a trial. and so they will not be talking, according to their counselors here, until all that is done with. >> happy to hear that, actually. susan candiotti. reporting live for us. thank you. now the interview you will see only on cnn. pedro and onil castro speaking publicly for the first time about their brother ariel. the ten years of torture he allegedly inflicted on his victims, and the impact this madness has had on all of them.

here's martin savidge with a cnn exclusive. >> what is your brother to you now? >> monster, hateful, i hope he rots in that jail. i don't even want them to take his life like that. i want him to suffer in that jail. to the last extent. i don't care if they even feed him. what he has done to my life and my family's. >> i feel the same way. >> to the both of you now he no longer exists? >> right. >> yeah. >> he is gone? >> he is gone. >> almost as if he were dead. >> yeah. monster is a goner. i'm glad that he left the door unlocked or whatever he did. whether he did it on purpose, maybe he wanted to get caught. maybe time was up. maybe he was inside too much he wanted to get caught. but if he did it that way he shouldn't have let them pick me up and put me in a car if he know that was going to happen. >> if you could talk to gina, you could talk to manda, and in

way you are, i guess, what would you say? >> i would -- i would tell her -- i would tell them that i'm sorry that you had to go through this. that i was -- i was thinking about these girls being missing, and i'm just grateful that they're home, and you know, out of that horrible house, and i just -- i just tell them that i'm sorry for what ariel done. because see -- not much -- felix, i know him for long time, and when i find out that ariel had gina, i just -- i just broke -- i just broke down.

because, it's shocking. ariel we know this guy for a long time, felix. >> this is gina's father. >> yeah, felix. felix dejesus. and you got his daughter? and you go -- you go around like it's nothing, you even went to the vigils? you had posters? you give his momma a hug? and you got his daughter captive? >> onil, same thing? >> the same thing. i just want also the families to get the justice to the fullest extent, and i don't want ariel to see anything like that happen to anybody in this world. this has torn my heart apart. this has killed me. i am a walking corpse right now. >> that was their story. you're going to want to stay

parade said the situation was pure chaos. >> everybody started running, and running and running, and we weren't sure what's going on. and they're shoot being. >> i just opened my door today and two guys just collapse right down on my steps you know, me and my daughter did the best thing we can to revive them. >> meantime the mayor of new orleans says they'll hunt down those that are responsible. >> we have mothers that were shot, sisters that were shot, we have little children that were shot. these kinds of incidents are not going to go unanswered. we're going to be very, very aggressive. there were hundreds of people out there today. so somebody knows who did this. >> and coming up in the next hour of "early start," a live report from new orleans. >> even more going on this morning, new developments in the murder of 8-year-old california girl leila fowler. her 12-year-old brother arrested for allegedly murdering his sister. their stepmother crystal walters posted a brief message on facebook saying this, thank you to those who are standing by us in this devastating time for our

family. and thank you for respecting our privacy during this time. we need a little space. happy mother's day to all. >> wow. >> cnn's dan simon is live in valley springs, california, following this story. good morning, dan. >> good morning, john. for two weeks this community was on the lookout for a killer. someone who randomly barged into a home and stabbed and murdered an 8-year-old little girl. at least that's what the community thought. now according to the sheriff it wasn't random at all. in the days after her killing, an emotional candle light vigil to remember 8-year-old leila fowler, known for her bubbly personality. >> layly was beautiful and strong, she was kind, i remembered that leila liked purple. >> reporter: leila's family among the mourners, seen here was her 12-year-old brother, the one who had told police that an intruder stabbed his sister while they were home alone, and their parents were at a little league baseball game. a story authorities now say was

a lie. >> at 5:10 p.m. detectives arrested leila's 12-year-old brother at the valley springs station and -- on charges of homicide. these types of cases require a certain amount of time, and it was our commitment to make sure that we did a thorough job as possible. >> reporter: the family remained visible throughout the investigation. leila's mother spoke about the closeness between her son and daughter. >> he never like pushed her around, like big brothers and sisters do. he never like was ever was mean to her. >> reporter: in the immediate aftermath of the killing two weeks ago, his usually serene northern california community of 7500 went into a near frenzy, as nervous residents believed a killer was at large. and wondered whether there would be more victims. >> i've lived here 33 years. i've never seen anything like this happen. >> we've had bad things happen in our community, but never like

this to a little child. >> reporter: patricia campbell owns a popular diner in town. she and everyone else we talked to her were shocked at the turn of events. >> it's bad enough to lose one of your own children. i can't imagine losing one, too. by the hand of one of my own. i couldn't imagine that. >> it was surprising, but i kind of had a feeling that it might be him, you know. a lot of people don't want to look at it that way, you know, but seems like family, you got to look at the family first, for me. >> well, authorities are not releasing the 12-year-old's name because he is a minor. john, the main question today is why? what would motivate a 12-year-old brother to do this, and what ultimately made authorities suspicious? we know dna and other evidence was taken from the home. but it's not clear yet what ties the 12-year-old to the crime. >> dan simon for us in california. appreciate it, dan. a good samaritan extremely critical condition this morning after getting attacked by a

group of teenagers while trying to break up a fight. police in huntington beach, california, say between 5 and 10 teens used their skateboards as weapons going after the 25-year-old man saturday at a local skate park. the victim tried to flee into a nearby laundromat but the group followed him and continued attacking. the 14-year-old suspects are now under arrest charged with attempted murder. police say even more arrests could be coming soon. nevada inmate 1027820 is due in court today in las vegas. you know him as o.j. simpson. he'll ask the judge to throw out his 2008 conviction for sports memorabilia heist at gunpoint and order a new trial. simpson claims his former attorney botched his case. he's currently serving a 9 to 33-year prison sentence. experts say this is a legal equivalent of a hail mary pass. >> i cannot remember a time when there was not drama surrounding o.j. simpson. this will go on forever. >> coming up, new outrage as details emerge about how the irs specifically targeted tea party groups. the latest in this developing story coming up next.

wells fargo advisors. welcome back, everyone. outrage growing this morning as new details emerge about how the irs specifically targeted tea party groups. on friday, the irs admitted it made mistakes over the last few years while trying to process requests from groups seeking tax exempt status. cnn's dan lothian has more. >> reporter: tea party and other conservative groups that rose to power early in the president's first term were unfairly targeted for special scrutiny by the irs. and some agency officials knew as early as june 2011, according to an irs audit that sources tell cnn is expected to be released this week. >> this is truly outrageous. and it contributes to the profound distrust that the american people have in government. go >> i don't care if you're a

conference, a liberal, a democrat or a republican, this should send a chill up your spine. >> reporter: the audit will show irs agents singled out groups, some with tea party or patriot in their names, that had applied for tax exempt status. despite protests by these groups, the irs had previously denied any unfair targeting. there's absolutely no targeting. this is the kind of back and forth that happens when people apply. >> reporter: the irs now says its quote, senior leadership, was not aware of the special scrutiny at the time of that hearing. but with the results of the audit about to become public the agency now says officials were just trying to deal with the large influx of new tax exempt requests. quote, mistakes were made initially but they were in no way due to any political or partisan rationale. we fixed the situation last year. white house press secretary jay carney says the president expects swift and appropriate steps to address any misconduct if it is found. >> what we know about this is of concern. and we certainly find the

welcome back. 23 minutes past the hour with "minding your business" this morning, and what a rally on wall street. 18 record highs this year for the dow. the s&p 500 trading above 1600. >> you know what i would call this market? i would call it hot. >> we want to say hot, hot, hot, right? >> apparently we do. where do we go from here and is it too late to get in? christine romans in song hopefully has the details. >> the little market that could. again and again you've seen records this year. an amazing year. look at the gains only five months into 2013 the major averages are up 13% to 15% the dow leading the way. to compare the dow rose 7% all of last year. driving this rally, you know, positive economic data. housing is recovering. layoffs are slowing. people are finding money and spending it. there's also nowhere else to put your money, because the fed is keeping interest rates so low.

returns on bonds and interest-bearing accounts, negligible. you're not getting money for saving so the market is rewarding people who are taking risk, and analysts say it's not too late to get in. >> the way we've seen some of the industrial names lag really to me is a buying opportunity, because i think we will have economic growth, and these more sensitive companies have plenty of opportunity to get stronger. >> alcoa, caterpillar, apple, people are buying into these companies because they think shares are undervalued. apple's down 15% this year. td ameritrade say new buyers see that opportunity and are rushing in. more of its clients than ever before own that stock. not because it's beaten down because apple is now going to pay $100 billion to shareholders over the next few years. so some action in apple. overall, analysts said equities look cheaper today than in pastorallies based on how earnings look compared with

instead two young women who happened to be driving by seymour avenue last week when officers rushed in to suspected kidnapper ariel castro's home, they wound up witnessing and videotaping the final chapter of a ten-year horror story. susan candiotti live from cleveland, amazing pictures, susan. these two young women have quite a story to tell. >> what timing. they happened to be driving down the street and see the flashing lights from a police car behind them and think uh-oh, as you said, we're the ones in trouble so they pull over. then they look in front of them and see they're not the ones being pulled over at all. they see amanda berry holding her little girl in front of her and walking by saying i'm amanda berry. they immediately recognize her as the person who's been missing for ten years. everyone practically knows her name in the cleveland area. and then they fumble with the cell phone and they start rolling that video and see the cops rush up to the front door trying to rescue the other two

women who eventually would come out. and then the phone battery died. so they don't have very much video. but they saw quite a lot, and something they said they will never, ever forget, john. >> manic about it with the police rushing in. also something so mundane, just another house on the block just imagining what went on in there for ten years. susan, ariel castro, we heard bail set at $8 million for him last week. what is next for the suspect? >> that's right. well he's certainly not going to be back to this house again. you can see there's still a police car sitting out in front of that place. it's boarded up, sealed off as a crime scene, while he is sitting in a jail cell all by himself under suicide prevention. waiting for the next shoe to drop and that is expected to be a number of indictments, charges from a grand jury. john? >> and susan, the victims now have lawyers,s they now have public relations representations, when do we think we might hear from them? >> well, that's hard to say. this public relations team that

is taking care of them at no charge is guiding them through the system. and they are saying that it's unlikely they are going to talk until all the criminal proceedings are through. you can imagine they still have a lot to get through physically, and emotionally. and they've read brief statements from them in which all three of the young ladies were thanking everyone for their support but saying we need time to gather ourselves, and eventually reconnect with all of our family members, and friends. john? >> we certainly hope they get every bit of the time they need. susan candiotti in cleveland for us. thanks so much. and now a cnn exclusive, pedro and onil castro breaking their silence about their brother ariel and the unspeakable crimes he allegedly committed. pedro and onil were initially arrested along with their brother for the kidnapping of amanda berry, michelle knight and gina dejesus. even though they were quickly cleared by police the brothers tell cnn's martin savidge they're feeling very much like victims, too.

>> i want this to be true. like i said earlier i want to wake up out of this nightmare. >> i want to say that i don't want to be hunted down like a dog for a crime that i did not commit. i don't want to be locked up in my house because somebody out there is going to do harm to me. >> and there are real concerns about that in that community. the entire interview with bid row and onil castro airs at 7:00 this morning on "starting point." including the final words ariel castro said to each of his brothers in jail last week. i know on "starting point" you're also going to start to maria castro the cousin that was one of their first concerns when those two brothers were let go. that they cannot go back into the community because they will be hunted down. very worried about that. >> this interview is riveting. do not miss it. other news, in just a few hours o.j. simpson will be back in court trying to convince a nevada judge that his 2008

robbery and kidnapping conviction should be thrown out, and that he should get a new trial. simpson claims his former attorney mishandled the case. he's expected to testify, o.j. is, at some point this week. cnn's paul vercammen is following developments for us this morning live in las vegas. good morning, paul. >> good morning, john. o.j. simpson's going to enter this courthouse in a prison uniform around 9:00 las vegas time. look at this, to borrow a football term, as a legal hail mary. these are the last images of o.j. simpson in public, being led out of a las vegas courtroom to prison in late 2008. simpson was convicted of kidnapping and armed robbery for leading armed men into a hotel room to try to settle a dispute over sports memorabilia he wanted back. >> we were just robbed at gunpoint by o.j. simpson. >> reporter: simpson was secretly recorded during the confrontation, which became part of the 2008 trial testimony. >> [ bleep ] still [ bleep ] out here.

>> reporter: simpson's new lawyers will argue their client was so horribly represented in that kidnapping trial, he deserves a new trial and freedom. >> we firmly believe he did not get a fair trial. i think that's going to bear out during the hearing. we want the judge to take a fresh look at this, what should have been presented, what wasn't presented, what was said, what wasn't said. >> reporter: simpson is expected to take the witness stand this week, something he never did in the las vegas kidnapping trial, or his sensational televised trial in 1995. where he was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife nicole brown simpson and her friend ronald goldman. other witnesses expected this week are now retired prosecutors in the las vegas case, and simpson's lead attorney in the kidnap trial and a former ally. simpson's new lawyers will argue that gallanter has a conflict of interest in part because of his business dealings with the football star. simpson has been housed at the lovelock correctional center in

northern nevada. his lawyers call him a model inmate. >> it's common in the prison for there to be different factions that don't get along with each other, and because of his status as a celebrity, and his personality, he's sometimes mediates between different groups when they're having conflicts. >> reporter: simpson is now hoping his new legal team will spring him from prison for good. and he is serving a long sentence, 9 to 33 years, john. >> it's been 4 1/2 years or so since anyone has seen o.j. i mean, what do his lawyers say he's like these days? >> well, they say o.j. is noticeably arthritic. they say he has turned gray. he's a little bit heavier. they say he is sort of slow of movement but he's still, they say, rather sharp. so i'll see all of this when he takes the witness stand possibly wednesday of this week. >> that will be fascinating. paul vercammen in las vegas, thanks so much, paul. appreciate it.

attorneys for james holmes will ask a judge today to change their client's plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. the suspect in the aurora movie theater massacre is facing possible death penalty. a mental evaluation could take weeks or even months. holmes accused of opening fire in a crowded theater, killing 12 people, wounding 70 others. and coming up a mother's day surprise in the form of an eight-foot alligator. saying good morning on her front porch. >> happy mother's day. the street. they witnessed amanda berry clutching her daughter and identifying herself to police last week in the moments after her escape from ten years in captivity. all three victims are asking for privacy in order to recover. leila fowler's family asking for privacy now that leila's 12-year-old brother has been arrested for killing his 8-year-old sister. their stepmother crystal walters posted a message on facebook saying, quote, thank you to those who are standing by us in this devastating time for our family. and thank you for respecting our privacy during this time. we need a little space. happy mother's day to all she says. and a massive house fire in pottsville, pennsylvania, claimed the lives of two adults and four children. this was sunday night. a neighbor alerted police that people may be trapped inside. but the fire had already engulfed that home. take a look at this. it's massive. no word on what caused that fire. the unlikely survivor of the bangladesh building collapse is said to be fragile but improving steadily this morning.

state-run media says the 19-year-old mother named reshma has started eating regular food. she'll be in the hospital for a new for days. she was trapped in the rubble for 17 days. >> that is unbelievable. she survived. >> before the rescuers found her. amazing. president obama meeting up with british prime minister david cameron at the white house. that's expected later this morning. they're expected to discuss possible ways to jump-start the global economy and strengthen syria's opposition. barbara walters is calling it a career. legendary journalist plans to retire next summer. she's expected to make the announcement later this morning on "the view." in a statement released by abc walters says i'm very happy with my decision and look forward to a wonderful and special year ahead, both on "the view" and with abc news. walters will remain executive producer of "the view" which, of course, is the show she created in 1997. >> quite a career the woman has had. all right, so just when we thought we were done with winter, freeze warnings and watches are in effect for at

and who could blame them. they're driving down the street. all of a sudden they see police lights behind them. they pull over, think what did we do wrong? and then it became perfectly clear seconds later that police didn't care a thing about them, they were focused on this house over my shoulder. and where did you see her, amanda and her little girl? >> coming down the street. >> and then everything unfolded right here? >> yep. >> these two women happened to turn on to ariel castro's street and found themselves smack in the middle of an amazing escape to freedom. >> amanda walking down the street with a cop right when the cop asked her who are you, she passed us and said amanda berry. >> when you heard the name amanda berry and you knew exactly -- >> me and her looked at each other and we had goose bumps and then we pulled up our hoodie and like, you know -- >> goose bumps. >> it hit us quick. >> when she said amanda berry i saw it in her eyes and i knew it was really her. she had tears coming down her face. >> she pulled out her cell phone and rolled video as police ran

unbelievable. susan candiotti. the defendant being held right now on $8 million bond. what are the next legal steps for ariel castro? >> well, he's sitting there in that jail cell all by himself. the sheriff said he's only had a couple of visitors since friday. some lawyers who came to see him. don't know whether they've been hired or not. but the next step, of course, is waiting for that grand jury indictment to be coming down. we don't know exactly when that will be. but he's sure to face a ton of charges. john? >> all right, susan candiotti in cleveland for us this morning. thanks so much. now an interview that you will only see on cnn. pedro and onil castro breaking their silence about their brother ariel. the ten years of torture he allegedly inflitted on his victims, and the impact his madness has had on them. here's martin savidge with a cnn exclusive. >> what is your brother to you now? >> monster, hateful, i hope he rots in that jail. i don't even want them to take his life like that. i want him to suffer in that jail. to the last extent.

about these girls being missing, and i'm just grateful that they're home, and you know, out of that horrible house, and i just -- i just tell them that i'm sorry for what ariel done. because see -- not much -- felix, i know him for long time, and when i find out that ariel had gina, i just -- i just broke -- i just broke down. because, it's shocking. ariel we know this guy for a long time, felix. >> this is gina's father. >> yeah, felix. felix dejesus. and you got his daughter? and you go -- you go around like it's nothing, you even went to the vigils?

you had posters? you give his momma a hug? and you got his daughter captive? >> onil, same thing? >> the same thing. i just want also the families to get the justice to the fullest extent, and i don't want ariel to see anything like that happen to anybody in this world. this has torn my heart apart. this has killed me. i am a walking corpse right now. >> you can see with cnn the entire interview with pedro and onil castro airs at 7:00 eastern on "starting point." including the final words ariel castro said to each of them after he'd been arrested. these guys, you know, can't go back home. they've received death threats but there's one thing that i really want to point out because everybody's saying hey, how could they not have known they

were in that house? but ariel castro's own daughter had also been inside the home. she had asked to go upstairs to the bedroom, he said no, it's a mess, i'm not going to let i up there. this didn't happen to them. it happened to other people. musicians were in and out of that house. >> a web of lies. this interview was riveting. do not miss it. we are also following developments in new orleans. police are vowing to make swift arrests after gunmen opened fire on a neighborhood mother's day parade. 19 people were wounded including two children, cnn has just obtained video of the actual shooting. listen to this. >> i got [ bleep ] -- [ gunshots ] >> that's awful. witnesses saw three suspects running from the scene of the shooting. cnn's alina machado is live in new orleans with the latest on the manhunt going on right now. good morning, alina.

>> good morning, john. all we know at this point is that as you mentioned police continue to search for three suspects who were seen leaving this scene. we also understand that police believe all of the shots that were fired came from different guns. now this all happened yesterday afternoon around 1:30 as the parade was making its way down here, frenchman street in the seventh ward. this place was packed with people who were out here celebrating that parade. and also celebrating mother's day. we have two eyewitness accounts for you. take a listen. >> everybody started running and running and running and we wondered what was going on in the shooting. >> i just opened my door today and two guys just collapsed right down my steps, you know, and me and my daughter did the best thing we can to revive them. >> now police say 19 people were wounded, two of those people are children. they are 10 years old. the good news in all of this is that police believe the wounds are not life threatening. in other words, these people are

expected to survive. now shortly after the shooting, the mayor of new orleans held a news conference. he is vowing to get to the bottom of what happened here. he is also encouraging the community to come forward and help with the investigation. take a listen. >> we have mothers that were shot, sisters that were shot. we have little children that were shot. these kinds of incidents are not going to go unanswered. we're going to be very, very aggressive. there were hundreds of people out there today. so somebody knows who did this. >> the shooting comes as new orleans continues to deal with violence. the city has the highest per capita murder rate among large cities and it's worth noting that the police department here is offering a reward in hopes that that will help get to the bottom of what happened. john? >> $10,000 i'm seeing. alina, this was mother's day. any idea about a possible motive? >> that's something that police are still trying to figure out, exactly what led to this

shooting. we do know that from the fbi, the fbi does not believe that this was an act of terrorism. they are naming this as an act of street violence. we hope that police will be able to figure out exactly what led to this violence, as they continue talking to people who were out here, and who may know more about what happened. john? >> in new orleans, appreciate it. eleven minutes past the hour. new developments this morning in the murder of 8-year-old california girl leila fowler. her 12-year-old brother arrested for allegedly murdering his sister. their stepmother crystal walters posted a brief message on facebook saying, quote, thank you to those who are standing by us in this devastating time for our family. and thank you for respecting our privacy during this time. we need a little space. happy mother's day to all. cnn's dan simon is live in valley springs, california, following just this tragic development. good morning to you, dan. >> good morning, zoraida. for two weeks this community was on the lookout for a killer. someone who randomly barged into

a home and stabbed and murdered a 12-year-old little girl. at least that's what the community thought. now according to the sheriff it wasn't random at all. in the days after her killing, an emotional candle light vigil to remember 8-year-old leila fowler, known for her bubbly personality. >> leila was beautiful and strong. she was kind. i remembered that leila liked purple. >> reporter: leila's family among the mourners, seen here was her 12-year-old brother, the one who had told police that an intruder stabbed his sister while they were home alone, and their parents were at a little league baseball game. a story authorities now say was a lie. >> at 5:10 p.m. detectives arrested leila's 12-year-old brother at the valley springs station and -- on charges of homicide. these types of cases require a certain amount of time, and it

was our commitment to make sure that we did a thorough job as possible. >> reporter: the family remained visible throughout the investigation. leila's mother spoke about the closeness between her son and daughter. >> he never like pushed her around, like big brothers and sisters do. he never like was ever was mean to her. >> reporter: in the immediate aftermath of the killing two weeks ago, his usually serene northern california community of 7500 went into a near frenzy, as nervous residents believed a killer was at large. and wondered whether there would be more victims. >> i've lived here 33 years. i've never seen anything like this happen. >> we've had bad things happen in our community, but never like this to a little child. >> reporter: patricia campbell owns a popular diner in town. she and everyone else we talked to her were shocked at the turn of events. >> it's bad enough to lose one of your own children. i can't imagine losing one, too. by the hand of one of my own.ha

>> it was surprising, but i kind of had a feeling that it might be him, you know. a lot of people don't want to look at it that way, you know, but seems like family, you got to look at the family first, for me. >> well, authorities are not releasing 9 brother's name because he is a minor. the main question is why? what would motivate someone to do this to his little sister? hopefully we'll get some more answers today. >> that just makes absolutely no sense. have investigators found a murder weapon? >> yeah, that's a great question. we know that after the murder occurred, evidence was taken from the home, dna evidence, as well, we're told, or at least reportedly, some knives were taken away from the home. but we don't know if those knives, in fact, linked the 12-year-old brother to the murder of his sister, zoraida. >> no doubt that community is reeling from this. dan simon live in valley springs, california, for us. >> 14 minutes after the hour right now. coming up the news that has washington all atwitter this

good morning to you. welcome back to "early start." it is outrage. it's growing this morning as new details emerge about how the irs specifically targeted tea party groups. on friday, the irs admitted that it made mistakes over the last few years, while trying to process requests from groups seeking tax exempt status. cnn's dan lothian has more. >> reporter: tea party and other conservative groups that rose to power early in the president's first term were unfairly targeted for special scrutiny by the irs. and some agency officials knew as early as june 2011, according to an irs audit that sources tell cnn is expected to be released this week. >> this is truly outrageous. and it contributes to the profound distrust that the american people have in government. >> i don't care if you're a conservative, a liberal, a democrat or a republican, this should send a chill up your spine. >> reporter: the audit will show irs agents singled out groups,

some with tea party or patriot in their names, that had applied for tax exempt status. despite protests by these groups, the irs had previously denied any unfair targeting. there's absolutely no targeting. this is the kind of back and forth that happens when people apply. >> reporter: the irs now says its quote, senior leadership, was not aware of the special scrutiny at the time of that hearing. but with the results of the audit about to become public the agency now says officials were just trying to deal with the large influx of new tax exempt requests. quote, mistakes were made initially but they were in no way due to any political or partisan rationale. we fixed the situation last year. white house press secretary jay carney says the president expects swift and appropriate steps to address any misconduct if it is found. >> what we know about this is of concern. and we certainly find the actions taken as reported to be inappropriate.

"minding your business" this morning. it has been an amazing run on wall street. the dow, nasdaq, s&p 500, all up big time. 13% to 15% this year. the dow's hit 18 record highs. however, stock futures indicate a lower opening today. >> meantime we have another big

story for you. bangladesh wages could soon rise after last month's building chance at a garment factory that killed more than 1100 workers. our christine romans has been following this story. >> we are addicted to cheap clothes in the u.s. and europe and those clothes by and large come from bangladesh and if you doubled the wages of those workers, it would add just a few cents to the price of your apparel. that's according to a uk union group. as it stands textile workers in bangladesh are paid $38 a month. wages last rose back in 2010. in china for example a textile worker makes $138 a month. those cheap wages mean cheap clothes for a voracious american and european market addicted to fashion but after that factory collapse last month in dhaka american retailers are facing consumers who are furious over the conditions under which clothes are made. that rubble, that rubble, there's a direct connection from that rubble to the hangers in your closet. bangladesh textile minister said that the government's going to start talks with labor groups

and factory owners about raising wages for those garment workers. factory owners don't want to do it. they don't want to raise wages. an eu trade commissioner calls this whole system modern slavery. others say working in a clothing factory is the best, only option for women in bangladesh because they have no alternative. in many cases these women have to borrow money to get money from their next paycheck just to make it through so just really low wages. the eu has warned bangladesh to make its factories safer or risk access to the uk market. that's where most of the clothes for bangladesh go. 98% of american clothing comes from overseas. and bangladesh is rising quickly among the top exporters to the u.s. right after china and vietnam. bangladesh's clothing industry is booming so much the contract to overtake china within the next seven years. so a lot of consumers -- >> that's outrageous. >> i know. i was just in h&m over the weekend, and every single shirt i saw, $15, $14, $13, made in

dramatic cell phone video captures the moment a decade of horror ended for three kidnapped women in cleveland. breaking their silence. cnn's exclusive interview with the brothers of accused kidnapper and rapest ariel castro. and o.j. simpson is back in court. the juice wants a new trial. we're going to take you live to las vegas for all the details there. >> a lot going on this morning. >> a lot going on. >> welcome back to "early start." >> so two young women who thought they were being pulled over by police wound up witnesses to history.

they happened to be driving on seymour avenue in cleveland last week when officers were about to storm suspected kidnapper ariel castro's home. so they broke out a cell phone camera and began rolling on the final chapter of a ten-year horror story. susan candiotti is live from cleveland for us this morning. susan, these two young women have quite a story to tell. >> oh, yeah. and imagine the timing of all this. unfortunately, as they started to roll their cell phone, their battery died. so the video doesn't last very long but what they captured was fascinating. you get to see for the first time the police officers could be verging on the house, going inside to rescue the two victims who were still inside, gina and michelle, and this was just after the two women who arrived on the scene and drove up saw amanda berry standing outside holding her little girl. listen to what she had to say. >> seen amanda walking down the street with a cop, and right

when the cop asked her who are you, she passed us and said amanda berry. >> which i saw it in her eyes and i knew it was really her. and she had tears coming down her face. >> and they'll always remember that moment. they have the special video, and they were there to see all of this happen. to be there, to watch history unfold, as you said, zoraida. >> yeah, to document it. however short that video is, they have documented history. ariel castro, we know $8 million bond. he is sitting in jail right now. what is next for him? >> well, the grand jury, of course, will be meeting to consider charges against him. we're waiting to see whether the prosecutor, for example, will move forward with those aggravated murder charges involving what michelle knight said happened to her, that she became pregnant five times, each time she said ariel castro starved her for at least a couple of weeks, and then punched her in the instrument ack to cause miscarriages. and under ohio law, he could be

charged for murder because of that. >> makes you sick to your stomach every time you hear that. susan, thank you very much. >> and now the interview you will only see on cnn. pedro and onil castro, breaking their silence about their brother ariel and the unspeakable crimes he allegedly committed. you'll remember pedro and onil were both initially taken into custody along with their brother for the kidnappings. in this cnn exclusive, they tell our martin savidge they are feeling very much like victims, too, now. even though they were quickly cleared by police. >> i want this to be true. like i said earlier i want to wake up out of this nightmare. >> i want to say that i don't want to be hunted down like a dog for a crime that i did not commit. i don't want to be locked up in my house because somebody out there is going to do harm to me.

>> see the entire exclusive interview with pedro and onil castro this morning at 7:00 eastern time on "starting point." including the final words that ariel castro said to each of his brothers in jail last week, including just amazing details about what these two brothers saw in that house over the last ten years. >> i spoke with victor perez, a chief assistant prosecutor of cleveland about that very specific thing. the fact that they released those two men. i said is there any possibility that you would take them back into custody? he said absolutely not, we have no evidence to suggest that they had anything to do with this. 34 minutes pa the hour. massive house fire in pottsville, pennsylvania, claimed the lives of two adults, four children. take a look at that fire. this was sunday night. a neighbor alerted police that people may be trapped inside that house but the fire had already engulfed the people. no word on what caused that fire. a developing story that we're following. a good samaritan is in extremely critical condition this morning

after getting attacked by a group of teen agers while trying to break up a fight. police in huntington beach, california, say between 5 and 10 teen agers used their skateboards as weapons, going after the 25-year-old man saturday at a local skate park. the victim trying to flee into a nearby laundromat but the group followed him, and continued attacking him. four juvenile suspects are under arrest, charged with attempted murder. police say more arrests could be coming soon. his playing career and criminal trials are both the stuff of legends. in just a few hours o.j. simpson will be back in court in las vegas, asking for a new trial. simpson was sent to prison in 2008 for his part in the armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers. he claims he was improperly represented by his former attorney and he says now the conviction should be thrown out. cnn's paul vercammen is following the story for us live this morning in las vegas. good morning, paul. >> good morning, john. when simpson calls into court

he's 65 years old now, almost 66. this lawyers say that he's a little slower in his movements and he's arthritic, and in this case, he is going to take the stand. these are the last images of o.j. simpson in public, being led out of a las vegas courtroom to prison in late 2008. simpson was convicted of kidnapping and armed robbery for leading armed men into a hotel room to try to settle a dispute over sports memorabilia he wanted back. >> we were just robbed at gunpoint by o.j. simpson. >> reporter: simpson was secretly recorded during the confrontation, which became part of the 2008 trial testimony. >> [ bleep ] still [ bleep ] out here. >> reporter: simpson's new lawyers will argue their client was so horribly represented in that kidnapping trial, he deserves a new trial and freedom. >> we firmly believe he did not get a fair trial. i think that's going to bear out during the hearing. we want the judge to take a fresh look at this, what should have been presented, what wasn't presented, what was said, what

wasn't said. >> reporter: simpson is expected to take the witness stand this week, something he never did in the las vegas kidnapping trial, or his sensational televised trial in 1995. where he was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife nicole brown simpson and her friend ronald goldman. other witnesses expected this week are now retired prosecutors in the las vegas case, and yale gallant her, simpson's lead attorney in the kidnap trial and a former ally. simpson's new lawyers will argue that gallanter has a conflict of interest in part because of his business dealings with the football star. simpson has been housed at the lovelock correctional center in northern nevada. his lawyers call him a model inmate. >> it's common in the prison for there to be different factions that don't get along with each other, and because of his status as a celebrity, and his personality, he's sometimes mediates between different groups when they're having

conflicts. >> reporter: simpson is now hoping his new legal team will spring him from prison for good. and simpson was sentenced from 9 to 33 years. his lawyers will also argue that that sentence was rather excessive. >> it will be fascinating to see him in court, paul, because as you said, 4 1/2 years since any of us had a glimpse of him. what can you tell us about his new representation? >> this is interesting, because, as you know, o.j. has had just some absolutely over-the-top internationally known attorneys. and his new lawyer is rather reserved. she's a judge pro temp. she's been a prosecutor and a defense attorney and you'll see that she has a rather understated style compared to some of the more bombastic things we've seen in the court in the past from o.j. simpson's attorneys. >> different sort of lawyer for him. paul vercammen, thanks. 38 minutes past the hour. attorneys for james holmes will ask a judge today to change their client's plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.th

theater massacre is facing possible death penalty. a mental evaluation could take weeks or even months. holmes accused of opening fire in a crowded theater, killing 12 people, wounding 70 others. all right you've got to see this. this is new video just in to cnn. a building implosion goes terribly wrong. there's the blast right there. but then it just sort of stops. the original attempt in red bank, australia, yesterday. they left the dynamite, the building ended up tipping and staying there and leaning like that. it is not supposed to happen like that, not the slow lean. and ultimately, the process worked. it was -- >> nobody got injured. >> just embarrassing, i think. >> there it goes. timber! >> oh, my goodness. this is how you don't do this. right? all right the powerball jackpot going up because no one picked the right numbers for saturday's

to the cyclists involved in the race here. this is the event that he wants to take around the world. and throwing himself in, as usual. >> he's fantastic. why not? >> i'll tell you one why not, 300 days a year of sunshine here in our beautiful colorado. why don't you move here? >> because it's not always sunny. >> reporter: he would also have to get more used to football. american style. harry's a rugby fan but gave the u.s. version a go. was he targeting the media pen, you wonder? on the next leg of the tour, to new york, harry takes on another iconic american sport, baseball. he's been given some tips on throwing the ball, or pitching. just as well, baseballs could be more dangerous than footballs. media beware. the prince will also meet up

lineup. speaking of lineups, former nfl wide receiver titus young was arrested on friday marking the third time he found himself in handcuffs. this past week, young allegedly broke into a home tried to outrun the cops, then got into an altercation with the police. this comes on the heels of suspicion of driving under the influence and attempting to steal his car out of the tow yard when it was impounded. from the department of when billionaires get bored richard branson played the part of a female flight attendant after losing a bet. the owner of virgin airlines had to get all decked out and serve the owner of air asia after the two bet on whose formula one racing team would have a better season. branson admitted maybe this isn't his best look and he's probably suited for his regular gig. during that eight-hour flight, branson happened to accidentally drop a tray of drinks in the lap of tony fernandez, who owns asia airlines. air asia. >> just happened to. >> yeah, this is when you don't
